Prognosis

The prognosis for the eye and vision will depend largely on the extent and the time period of retinal detachment prior to repair.
Prognosis is best for cases of early diagnosis and subsequent surgery, where only a small area of the retina is affected and no further accompanying eye diseases are present. In best case the eye can reobtain full vision power. However, in worst case retinal detachment can lead to permanent blindness.

Therefore, it is extremely important to consult your ophthalmologist as soon as the slightest sign of a retinal tear or even a retinal detachment is noticed. Awareness is even more vital for nearsighted people or elderly cataract patients after surgery. Naturally, patients of higher-risk groups and those who have already suffered from retinal detachment should be checked by an ophthalmologist at regular intervals. The intervals are best set individually with your ophthalmologist.
