„Dry“ and „wet“ macula
At the early stage of AMD the first „strangles“ under the retina are occuring – this is very often remained unnoticed by the persons affected. The disease can develop then in two different forms – the “dry” or the “wet” AMD.
Dry AMD
About 75 per cent of AMD patients are taken ill with the „dry“ form of the disease with a slow course. The visual disorder is increasing in the course of the time in the retinal middle - only at the advanced stage strong visual disorders are occuring.
Wet AMD
With about 10 to 15 per cent of AMD patients the „wet“ form of the disease is developing. Under the macula are created blood vessels where they usually do not exist. From these vessels a fluid is escaping which damages the receptor cells of the macula.
The course of the „wet“ AMD is considerably faster and more aggressive than with the „dry“ form of the disease. Although the “wet” AMD is the rarer form of the disease it is the much more dangerous one.
