AMD - information about diagnosis

How AMD is diagnosed

The eye specialist can diagnose the symptoms of AMD even at an early stage of the disease – the earlier AMD is recognized and treated the higher are the chances to stop the course of the disease or even to improve it.

One simple possibility of an early diagnosis which can also be carried out in a self-test is the Amsler grid eye-test. Thus persons affected can quickly recognize whether they are suffering from a visual disorder or not. However, this test should be completed with the medical check-up by the eye specialist.

During the microscopic examination with a so called „slit lamp“ possible changes of the retina can be exactly recognized by the eye specialist. A further examination method is the fluorescence angiography – by the means of an injected artificial colouring which is distributed via the bloodstream in the whole body are indicated leaking vessels or vascular neoplasm. For a further diagnosis the eye is additionally examined by ultrasound.

All mentioned examination methods are completely painless for the patient.
