A frequent disease of older people is the Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). This retinal disease can lead within a few months to a clear visual failure or even to blindness. In industrial nations this disease is even the most frequent cause of blindness. AMD is an age-related disease – from the age of fifty years the risk of being taken ill with AMD is increasing. A regular medical check-up is very important for everybody: the earlier AMD is recognized the higher are the chances for a successful treatment.
With this brochure we would like to give you some information about the disease and to explain you all important aspects of the causes, consequences and possible treatment methods of the Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
People get older ... As the term already says the Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease which occurs as a rule only at an advanced age. Scientists even assume that practically everybody who gets old enough is taken ill with AMD.
According to the risk factors and the hereditary diseases AMD can occur already from the age of fifty years. With regular examinations by the eye specialist and with an early diagnosis of the disease the progression of AMD can be reduced.
