Shortsightedness (Myopia)

Shortsighted people are able to see objects at a close distance clearly, while far away objects seem blurry. The eye of shortsighted people is mostly longer in comparison to the refractive power of the eye. The focal point of the incoming light rays does not lie on the retina but already in front of it.

The optical correction of shortsighted people is made by reducing the refractive power of the eye. Because of this correction, the focal point is moved further back onto the retina so that images can once again be seen sharply.

Eyeglasses and contact lenses make this possible through a concave lens with a corrective value indicated in minus dioptre. Your prescription will then for example read -4.75 dpt. The stronger the myopia, the higher the (negative) value and the thicker the glasses will be.  If surgery is performed, the total refractive power of the eye is altered to obtain the optimal condition.
